New Easter egg discovered in Nintendo classic Mike Tyson's Punch-Out after nearly 30 years
Finding Easter eggs — little snippets of fun left behind by developers — in your favourite video game is always exciting, but some are tucked away so well that it takes years before they are discovered. A Reddit user has released a video on 8 April that reveals a visual clue in Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!! nearly 30 years after it was released on the original Nintendo Entertainment System.
The newly discovered Easter egg lets you know exactly when to throw a knockout punch against Piston Honda and Bald Bull, two of the game's toughest foes. According to Reddit user midwesternhousewives, the subtle visual cue comes from a bearded man hidden among the spectators in the upper-left corner of the screen in the front row. In the second round against Piston Honda or Bald Bull, when the bearded man ducks, that's when Little Mac should throw a punch that can knock them out easily.
One user in the Reddit thread writes that "the bearded man did not flinch or move a single pixel until I reached the second fights with piston Honda and bald bull."
In 2009, the late Nintendo president Satoru Iwata revealed a camera flash in the first Bald Bull fight that signals when you should throw a punch to send your opponent to the mat.
While it is possible that some fans probably discovered the visual cue, midwesternhousewives was the first to give video evidence of the Easter egg. It's also refreshing to think that there are still secrets left to be discovered even in old school titles from the 1980s and 1990s.
Mike Tyson's Punch Out!! was released for the NES in 1987. In May 2009, a new version of the game was released for Wii. Real-life Mike Tyson previously tried to take on his Nintendo self in Punch Out!! while on the Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon. In an interview with TMZ, he also revealed that he couldn't even beat Glass Joe, one of the easiest opponents in the game.
