Inter Milan Defender Considering his Options as Tottenham Rumours Persist
Alvaro Pereira is happy to remain at Inter Milan for the foreseeable future but his agent admitted that he will make a final decision in December after being heavily linked with a move to Tottenham Hotspur.
The Uruguay international was strongly linked with Tottenham over the course of the summer after it became clear that Benoit Assou-Ekotto had fallen out of favour with Andre Villas-Boas.
The Spurs boss worked with Pereira at Porto, with the pair enjoying great success as the club won the Primeira Liga, the Portuguese Cup and the Europa League.
In the end there was no offer from the north London club but speculation has remained that one could arrive in January after Assou-Ekotto was allowed to join Queens Park Rangers on a season-long loan.
Pereira struggled to force his way into the Inter first team at the start of the season but has made three appearances and his agent claims that he is happy to fight for his place in the side.
"At the moment there is no truth," his agent Flavio Perchman told Tutto Mercato. "There are too many voices around Alvaro.
"The truth is that Inter have decided to focus on him. Pereira has a contract for another four years and therefore there is nothing to clarify."
However, he did then admit that the experienced left-back would consider his options before the transfer window opens in January.
"We'll see in December or early 2014," declared Perchman "The market is now closed, and it makes no sense to comment on the rumours coming out every day."
Tottenham have used Danny Rose at left-back this season but there is a lack of cover for the former Leeds United youth player with Jan Vertonghen and Kyle Naughton often asked to play out of position when replacement is needed.
Villas-Boas may well decide to strengthen his squad further in January and could well turn his attention to Pereira, though much will depend on whether the Uruguayan is gaining regular first team football at Inter.
He made his first start against rivals Roma but was substituted at half-time as Inter went on to lose the game 3-0.
"I do not see any problems," his agent added. "Pereira is not immovable but he played against Roma and will do so again when he is called for. For now - I repeat - it makes no sense to speak of market rumours."
