The Scottish island of Lewis and Harris has been voted one of the ten best islands in the world by TripAdvisor, ahead of more exotic tropical islands. The island in the Outer Hebrides also topped the list of the best islands in Europe, beating Greek islands such as Naxos and Santorini.

The rankings are based on the opinions of TripAdvisor users who have visited the islands.

James Kay, TripAdvisor spokesman said: "An island holiday usually conjures images of faraway palm-lined beaches, white sand and crystal clear water, but the results of this year's awards reveal that the ideal island getaway might be closer to home than you think."
