Power Rangers movie news: First look at Elizabeth Banks as the iconic Rita Repulsa
Entertainment Weekly have revealed the first image showcasing Elizabeth Banks' villain Rita Repulsa ahead of Lionsgate's upcoming Power Rangers movie reboot and boy, it's safe to say she looks rather menacing indeed.
According to the 42-year-old, her character's look this time round is more of "a modern and edgy re-imagining of the original Rita Repulsa," bringing her image into more contemporary times. "We wanted to give her a backstory that connects her to the new Rangers."
Repulsa's new costume does, indeed, look wildly different from the much older version of the character seen in Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, which now sports more of a reptilian, if somewhat stylish, look this time round compared to the large headdress and staff she donned in the original show. She's even boasting sharp golden talons similar to those worn by Charlize Theron's Queen Ravenna in the Snow White And The Huntsman franchise.
While the exact plot is being kept under wraps until nearer the release date, brief synopses have offered up an idea of what's to come. Following a similar formula to the beloved '90s television series, the movie will revolve around five high school students, who team up to save the world after "they learn that their small town of Angel Grove – and the world – is on the verge of being obliterated by an alien threat."
Starring alongside Banks in the eagerly-anticipated reboot will be Terra Nova actress Naomi Scott, who will bringing the Pink Ranger to life, Me And Earl And The Dying Girl star RJ Cyler as Blue Ranger, newcomer Dacre Montgomery as the Red Ranger and singer Becky G portraying the Yellow Ranger.
Project Almanac director Dean Israelite is on board to helm the film, while Power Rangers veteran Haim Saban is among the team of executive producers working on the reboot. Principal shooting on on set began back in late February with the film aiming for a US and UK cinematic release on 24 March 2017.
