Pratyusha Banerjee: Rahul Raj Singh charged with assault and intimidation in actress' suicide
The boyfriend of Indian TV star Pratyusha Banerjee has been been charged with assault, criminal intimidation and abetting the suicide of the 24-year-old. Rahul Raj Singh was charged just days after the lead actress in the popular Hindi tele-serial, Balika Vadhu, was found dead on 1 April.
Police moved against Singh after a complaint was filed by Banerjee's parents, who said he essentially drove her to her death. Banerjee was discovered hanging from a ceiling fan in her Mumbai home.
Her actress friend Sara Khan said that Banerjee had tried to commit suicide twice before and spoke about about her painful relationship with Singh.
Banerjee's parents accused Singh of physically and mentally abusing her over a six-month period. Allegations of mental and physical torture by Singh were also made, according to an India Today report.
"Life is difficult, Papa," her father said, lifting the lid on the conversation they had the day she died. "I will tell you all one day."
Police interrogated Singh for two days following the suicide, after which he entered a local hospital complaining of chest pains. He is expected to be taken into custody when he leaves.
"Singh's movements are being monitored as we are trying to corroborate his statement," an investigator told The Indian Express. "We have been checking text messages that the duo exchanged. We have obtained transcripts of their conversations that indicate fights between the couple."
Investigators are also reviewing surveillance footage outside the couple's apartment complex.
