Transfer Window Club-by-Club Guide: the Winners and Losers - Part 1

The transfer window ends at Harry Redknapp's car window, again

As the clock finally hit 11pm on Thursday and Peter Odemwingie was left sitting in his car facing a drive back to West Brom, the Premier League's football managers finally stopped chasing players and paused for reflection.

Some will have wished for a billionaire chairman like Tony Fernandes, while others would simply have been pleased not to lose their star players.

With the deadline reached, we thought it was time to take you through all of the transfers, and assess which managers will be feeling smuggest this weekend.

Arsenal

Arsene Wenger rarely dips his toes into the murky waters of the January window and it was with some reluctance that he was forced into a deal on deadline day. Make no mistake about it though, Nacho Monreal is a first class left-back who will undoubtedly strengthen Arsenal's squad. Perhaps Wenger should have addressed some of his team's other weaknesses, too. Most fans would have loved to see a defensive midfielder and a top-class striker.

Aston Villa

Paul Lambert is under pressure, that is clear. His young side are battling relegation and seem to be losing the war. This was a chance to bring in some experience, some steel to help a side whose average age is just 24. What arrived was a 25-year-old striker who has played just 11 games in England (for Leyton Orient) and a defensive midfielder from the French second division. Oh dear.

Chelsea

No £50 million spent on a formerly world class striker this year. Instead Chelsea were relatively sensible, bringing in a proven goalscorer for a very reasonable fee. Demba Ba will undoubtedly score lots of goals if handed the chance but what this side needs is stability. This will not be achieved until a permanent manager is appointed and lasts more than 12 months in the job.

Everton

David Moyes has consistently worked wonders in the transfer market. Last year it was Nikica Jelavic who arrived in January and scored nine league goals in just 13 games. This year Everton are flying high in fifth place and generally excel in the latter stages of the season. They kept hold of their best players, the likes of Leighton Baines and Marouane Fellaini, and brought in highly rated youngster John Stones. With a limited budget this was to be expected.

Fulham

Martin Jol's appearance makes it clear that he enjoys life. There is always a smile dancing on his lips, and perhaps that is why he has a penchant for building very attacking sides. At Fulham he is blessed with talented strikers and wide men who love to get forward. That has been boosted by the arrival of the offensive full-back/wing-back Urby Emmanuelson. But Jol has brought in some steel in the form of Emmanuel 'Dench' Frimpong from Arsenal who should provide some much needed cover when Fulham attack.

Liverpool

This was an important window for Brendan Rodgers after a poor start to his reign at Liverpool. Despite the impressive form of several young players, the decision to loan out Andy Carroll before finding a replacement was dubious. Cue a deal for Daniel Sturridge, who has impressed in his first few appearances and looks a good foil for Luis Suarez. Philippe Coutinho fits the current transfer policy but the Reds have looked poor at the back on numerous occasions and cannot rely on Jamie Carragher for much longer.

Manchester City

The Premier League champions. The club owned by one of the richest men on the planet. Surely some serious pocket change would be spent. But who would arrive? Napoli's Edinson Cavani perhaps, or maybe Radamel Falcao from Atletico Madrid? No, it was unknown Ghanaian striker Godsway Donyoh, who was immediately sent out on loan. Headline-grabbing sulky striker Mario Balotelli did depart for only a slight loss but all in all a rather strange month for a side seven points behind leaders Manchester United.

Manchester United

Top of the league, into the knockout stages of the Champions League and Robin van Persie topping the goalscoring charts with 18 already. Sir Alex had very little to worry about in January so celebrated by pulling off somewhat of a coup in trumping the likes of Arsenal, Tottenham, Chelsea and Liverpool to one of the most wanted players ever to grace the Championship - Wilfried Zaha. The old master rarely gets things wrong, and when he does - as in the case of £7m striker Bebe - he farms them out.

Newcastle United

Having been forced to sell top scorer Demba Ba to Chelsea, and finding themselves flirting with the relegation zone, this was an important month for Alan Pardew. Chief scout Graham Carr must have barely left France in January as Newcastle raided Ligue 1 for the best talent they could find. They got pipped to Loic Remy by fellow strugglers QPR but did manage to bring five players to the club. Three of these - Sissoko, Mbiwa and Gouffran - could prove very exciting indeed.

Norwich City

Manager Chris Hughton badly wanted striker Gary Hooper from Celtic, but had three offers rejected, so in the end settled for Leeds United's Luciano Becchio. One has impressed in the Champions League, the other in the Championship. But Becchio seems a decent signing as he links up with three former team-mates in Jonny Howson, Robert Snodgrass and Bradley Johnson. If they can supply the Argentine with ammunition, this could be a great piece of business.
