'Proud' father David Beckham denies 'pimping out' son Cruz in the Christmas music market
Piers Morgan had accused the Beckhams of 'pimping out' their 11-year-old son after he recorded his debut song.
When the entire world was gushing about young Cruz Beckham's charity single – If Every Day Was Christmas – British TV presenter Piers Morgan accused his famous parents of "pimping out" their son into the "commercial world". The nasty comment, which received flak online, doesn't seem to have gone down well with "proud" father David Beckham, as he responded to Morgan's cynicism.
The former footballer appeared on ABC's Good Morning America to hit back at critics and defend his 11-year-old son's choice to sing for a charitable cause. "He wanted to give back", David said asserting that Cruz's song was a one-off despite him signing to Justin Beiber's manager Scooter Braun.
"The amazing thing about this, we only realised Cruz has a cute little voice about nine months ago," the English footballer said adding, "Scooter has been a family friend for a while, so he said to bring him in, see if he enjoys it".
The 41-year-old, who was promoting the 70th anniversary of children's charity Unicef on the show shared, "For us, we always want in our children, we always hope they're listening to us or pay attention to us as parents, so we do a lot of work for charity for obviously Unicef and my wife does for the UN".
"And Cruz came to us and said 'How about I do a Christmas song for charity? And all the proceeds go to charity'. There's nothing more to this than that at the moment."
David also responded to Morgan's comment about Cruz's age and how he should be in school. "He's 11-years-old, he's still at school, he's concentrating at school that's the most important thing but he wanted to give back and he's done this amazing little Christmas song that's got a lot of attention," the father-of-four said.
"And you know we are very proud of it. He came to us with the idea. It's kind of cool but he's having fun."
Good morning Britain host Morgan had lashed out at Cruz's "fame-hungry" parents as he accused them of trying to "exploit their family for commercial gain."
Even Braun, who is a talent manager, defended young Cruz saying that "He is an 11-year-old who wanted to make a song to help other kids. Once again Piers shows why he is a jackass and why his show was cancelled."
Still not backing down, Morgan responded, "He's an 11yr-old child being cynically pimped out by his famous parents with your collusion. Be proud Scooter."
