PSV confirm Manchester United and PSG interest in signing Memphis Depay
PSV Eindoven technical manager Marcel Brands has revealed Manchester United's approach in signing their star winger Memphis Depay.
The 21-year-old has been a transfer target for top clubs across England and Europe. Apart from United, their league rivals Liverpool are also interested in securing his services. In addition to this, Paris Saint-Germain are also in the race for his services.
The Dutch club's manager Phillip Cocu already confirmed that Depay will leave PSV at the end of this season.
Brands confirmed Tottenham Hotspur wanted to sign the winger for €20m (£14.46m, $21.4m) last summer. However, the north London club's offer was turned down by both club and the player.
He also admitted that Ligue 1 winners are in the hunt for signing the Dutch international along with United and one more club.
"Spurs offered about €20 million last summer. Paris Saint-Germain then tested our resolve in the winter. But neither PSV, nor Memphis were interested in a winter move. We were talking about a lot of money, but decided against a transfer," Brands told Fox Sports.
"There are three big clubs that have approached us over Memphis Depay now, clubs that are concrete. There's PSG who are still interested, we have received a phone call from Manchester United, although no formal talks have taken place for now."
Depay has played under Louis van Gaal while the two were with the Netherlands national team. The reports strongly suggest the Dutch international will reunite with his former manager at Old Trafford.
PSV technical manager claims the player will decide his next destination after giving up any hope in retaining their star player.
"It's up to Memphis to make his decision in the end, though. I have little doubt that we will then be able to agree terms," he explained.
Depay scored a brilliant free-kick during his side's 4-1 win over Heerenveen, which helped PSV win the Eredivisie title this season. He has been in fine form for, scoring 20 goals and managing three assists from 27 league games.
