Overview
A confident Nadal will look to continue his impressive form when he takes on the Portugese, Sousa. The Spaniard had a tough time against American Sam Querrey in the third round, but beat him 6-4, 6-2. While the scoreline looks simple, it does no justice to the action on the court. Querrey appeared poised to upset Nadal particularly in the first set.
The 29-year-old seems to be back to his best, fighting and scraping for every point like the Nadal of old. With Ferderer pulling out of the tourney, he will know that only Djokovic and Murray stand in his way of clinching his fifth Madrid Open title.
World No 35 Sousa though not a big name, should not be overlooked as he has played solid if not spectacular tennis to get to the quarter-final. He comes into this tie on the back of a 6-1, 6-7(3), 6-2 win over American Jack Sock in the third round.
