Raisin Weekend: St Andrews students kickstart freshers week with giant foam fight
Raisin Weekend has been an annual tradition at the Scottish university for hundreds of years.
Hundreds of St Andrews students smothered each other with shaving foam to mark the end of the university's annual Raisin Weekend (16 October).
The weekend involves rituals which the new students, or "freshers" have to perform, culminating in a giant foam fight on the Lower College Lawn. Raisin Weekend dates way back into St Andrews history, deriving from the old tradition where new students gave their academic parents a pound of raisins as a thank you for welcoming them.
