Real Madrid 2-0 Roma - Wolfsburg 1-0 Gent: Uefa Champions League last 16 - as it happened
Full-time: Real Madrid 2-0 Roma, Wolfsburg 1-0 Gent
- Ronaldo gives Real the lead with his 90th Champions League goal.
- James adds a second within minutes to settle the tie.
- Andre Schurrle goal secures Wolfsburg's place in the quarter finals.
Prior to the match, there was plenty of speculation surrounding the future of Cristiano Ronaldo, who has been linked with a summer-time switch away from Los Blancos.
But he has been a constant thorn in the side of Roma this evening, proving once again that he remains a force to be reckoned with despite recent criticism.
With 15 minutes left in the match, Roma decide to introduce Francesco Totti.
The World Cup-winning star gets a huge ovation all around the ground. The Bernabeu stands to applaud as one of the modern game's greats makes his way on to the field.
Can he deliver one last moment of magic on the European stage, assuming he calls it quits at the end of the season?
GOAL: Real Madrid 1-0 Roma (Ronaldo)
Ronaldo gets the all-important goal that surely settles this tie. Vasquez makes a stylish dribble down the right side and crosses the ball to Ronaldo, who pokes it home from close range.
That makes it 3-0 to the ten-times champions on aggregate - and Ronaldo now has 90 goals in the Champions League. Amazing.
We've played an hour in the Spanish capital, meaning Roma have 30 minutes to do what they haven't been able to in 150 minutes against Real Madrid: score a goal.
They've created enough chances to be level over the two legs, at least, but their finishing has been woeful.
Will a hero step forward for the Italians?
There's around 15 minutes until kick-off in both of our games. The players are busily going through their last-minute preparations before things get underway.
In case you missed it earlier, Real have named a strong-looking team that features Ronaldo, James and Gareth Bale, who recently returned from injury.
For Roma, meanwhile, club legend Francesco Totti has been named among the subs.
Tonight could well mark the end of Francesco Totti's Champions League career.
The Italian - who is on the bench this evening - has never won the European Cup, but has provided the tournament with some memorable moments down the years.
He'll be hoping to make his mark in the Spanish capital tonight, also.
Pre-match thoughts...
Zinedine Zidane: "It's important to have scored ahead of the Champions League. Bale looked good, he was happy to play after so long. We'll see tomorrow and Monday for the match against Roma but I think he's ready.
"We talked at halftime ... we came out very strong in the second half [against Celta Vigo], more tuned in and then when you score goals it all gets easier."
Luciano Spalletti: "[Francesco] Totti is the history of Roma, the best Italian player in the post-war era. I learned so much from him. His moves have always been taken as an example to show young players.
"He has given so much to football and it's only right that this is recognised. I hope he closes his career in the best way, listening to what his heart tells him.
"Undoubtedly, my role becomes difficult in this situation, but I have absolute respect for the man and his career."
Gareth Bale will make his first start in nearly two months for Real Madrid against Roma in the Champions League after recovering from a calf injury.
The Welsh forward returned to action for the Spanish giants at the weekend as a substitute, scoring in a 7-1 win over Celta Vigo.
"It's great to return in this way and to score," the 26-year-old was quoted as saying by ESPN after the Celta match.
"I have spent four days training with my teammates – now I have to train well and keep improving. It's nice to be back and to score, but the most important thing was taking all three points."
So, that means Ronaldo, James and Bale all start for Real, which is likely to make for an interesting game.
The trio are sure to put the Romans under plenty of pressure and an early goal this evening could put this tie to bed.
We're still waiting for the Roma team, which should be with us in the next few minutes.
Real manager Zinedine Zidane teased his potential starting line-up before the game.
Here's what the World Cup-winning player-turned-coach said: "Gareth Bale is prepared and ready to play. That the most important thing.
"The players who play have to do their job. The players know what they have to do on the field.
"There's one idea, it's the same, it's to always defend when we don't have the ball and try to do damage when we have it. It will be difficult to pick the team tomorrow but its better having all your players available."
Good evening and welcome to our coverage of the Uefa Champions League clash between Real Madrid and Roma. Los Blancos hold a 2-0 advantage from the first leg and will look to book their place in the quarter finals tonight.
Elsewhere in Europe, Wolfsburg hold a 3-2 advantage over Belgian side Gent. They too, will be hoping to seal their place in the next round with another victory this evening.
In the meantime, stay tuned for team news from both games.
