Real Madrid will break the all-time La Liga record for consecutive wins if they beat Villarreal at the Santiago Bernabeu on 21 September.

Where to watch live

Kick-off is set for 7pm BST. The game will be broadcast live on Sky Sports 2 HD.

Overview

Goals from James Rodriguez and Karim Benzema gave Real Madrid a 2-0 win over Espanyol at the weekend – the Bernabeu club's 16th consecutive La Liga win stretching back to March. Victory over Villarreal would take Real past the all-time league record set by Pep Guardiola's Barcelona in the 2010/11 season.

Gareth Bale and Cristiano Ronaldo are both available after missing the Espanyol match through knocks. Pepe (knee) and Casemiro (concussion) are both sidelined, while midfielder Luka Modric has been rested by Zinedine Zidane.

Villarreal won their third straight match on the bounce as a Nicola Sansone brace powered them to a 2-1 win over Real Sociedad on 18 September. The Yellow Submarine have lost three of their last five meetings with Real Madrid.

Forwards Cedric Bakambu and Roberto Soldado are both out injured for the visitors.

What managers say

Zinedine Zidane: "We've had little time to prepare for the match, but we are prepared. We are going to try to get the three points, we don't look at others. We haven't won anything. The records are nice and we want to continue winning. I take it day by day. It's never easy to win. We have to think about our match. If we want to win something we have to win our matches."

Fran Escriba: "We have a plan against Madrid. We thought about how to minimise the threat of their great players and their team itself. We have to look to score – if you play for 0-0 it becomes very difficult. If we want to score at the Bernabeu we must be brave."
