Red carpet hots up as music stars arrive for the American Music Awards 2016
The music stars are red carpet ready for a night of spectacular collaborations.
As the red carpet hots up with early arrivals at the American Music Awards, music stars are preparing for a night of spectacular collaborations and back-slapping.
Hosted by supermodel Gigi Hadid and comedian Jay Pharoah, the evening will feature performances by Lady Gaga, Justin Bieber, Green Day, Niall Horan, John Legend, Bruno Mars, and The Weeknd.
The singing stars of the moment took to Twitter to give a sneak-peak into the preparations and the all-important red-carpet outfits as they anticipated their big entrance.
Host Gigi Hadid was an early arrival. Dressed in white lace from head-to-toe, all eyes will be on the supermodel as boyfriend Zayn Malik is nominated for Best New Act of the Year.
The model of the moment promised she wouldn't be "the embarassing girlfrined" on her boyfriend's big night.
Zayn's ex-bandmate Niall Horan also made a striking entrance on the red carpet, cutting a stylish figure in a smart, checked suit. The new solo star will be perfroming his debut single, This Town.
Justin Bieber, who will be performing live from his Purpose tour, sent his army of Beliebers a helpful reminder in a tweet. Meanwhile, Canadian singing sensation Shawn Mendes, who is in the runnings for Best New Act of the Year treated his fans to a livestream Q&A ahead of the event.
But it looks like it will be Drake's night one way or the other. The singer has 13 nominations setting a new AMA record for the most nominations in a single year, even surpassing Michael Jackson's 11 nominations in 1984.
His ex, Rihanna, follows closely behind with seven nominations, while British singer Adele and Justin Bieber have five each, and Beyoncé and The Chainsmokers have each received four nominations.
Joe Jonas, whose band DNCE is up for two awards said the acknowledgement was "overwhelming".
"You obviously make music because it's what's from your heart, but also you want to get out there and perform for this audience and the fans that vote and show up to shows and wait outside in the freezing cold to say hi," he said. "It's why we do it."
A highlight on the night will be the "special duets" by Ariana Grande and Nicki Minaj, Maroon 5 with Kendrick Lamar, and The Chainsmokers with Halsey.
The American Music Award of Merit honoree Sting will also take the stage to perform at this year's awards
The AMAs will be broadcast live from the Microsoft Theatre in Los Angeles on Sunday, Nov. 20, at 8 p.m. ET on ABC.
