Overview

Roger Federer's presence on the court itself is an event for tennis fans all over the world and the world number three displayed some breathtaking tennis to beat Mayer 7-6, 7-6 in the quarter-final on 10 June.

The Swiss created another record on the court, moving ahead of Ivan Lendl with 1,072 wins in his career; he is now only behind Jimmy Connors who leads the list with a record 1,256 victories. Federer, who is returning from a back injury, has reportedly stressed that he is fine, but it still looks like he is suffering from the after effects as he isn't moving as freely in Stuttgart as he did earlier in the season.

The former world number one is the definite favourite and considering the applause he draws from fans, they would want to see him play in the final in what will surely be the last time he competes in Germany.

The newest member of the top 10, Dominic Thiem, has had a brilliant season so far winning titles in Buenos Aires, Acapulco, finishing runner-up in Munich and making the semi-finals of Brisbane, Rio de Janeiro and finally Roland Garros.

The world number seven has a 43-11 win-loss record in 2016 and will come into this clash full of confidence knowing that he defeated Federer the last time they met, with the Austrian winning 7-6, 6-4 at the Rome Masters. If he can play as well as he did on that historic day, there are chances that he can upset Federer for a second time in his career.
