France's Gael Monfils takes on German Philipp Kohlschreiber in the second semi-final of the Rotterdam Open on 13 February (Saturday).

Overview

The second semi-final of the Rotterdam Open brings about one of the most-awaited clashes of the draw, with fifth seed Gael Monfils facing the unpredictable Philipp Kohlschreiber at the Ahoy Arena.

The sole seeded player left in the draw, Gael Monfils avoided an upset from German teenager Alexander Zverev winning 7-6, (7-4), 6-3 to progress through to the semi-final. The Frenchman made life hard for himself dropping serve in the first set, needing to save seven break points as his first-serve percentage dropped alarmingly in the second set.

Monfils has never won an ATP 500 title, with all of his five wins coming at the ATP 250 level. The Frenchman will be looking to put that record right and if he plays to his potential, there is no doubt that he could win his maiden ATP 500 title.

His opponent Philipp Kohlschreiber was not supposed to make it this far but the German showed everybody what he is capable of by stunning second seed Marin Cilic 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 in the quarter-final. Kohlschreiber, ranked 33, showed glimpses of his talent, producing nine aces along with 38 winners, taking over two hours to defeat Cilic.

This is the first time the German has reached the semi-final in eight attempts and he will be looking to go further and stun another favourite on the way to capturing his first ATP 500 title.
