Sarah Michelle Gellar to reprise Kathryn Merteuil role in Cruel Intentions TV series
Sarah Michelle Gellar has confirmed she will be reprising her role as the devilishly manipulative Kathryn Merteuil from the 1999 cult film classic Cruel Intentions in NBC's upcoming television series. The 38-year-old took to her personal Instagram account to share the news that not only would she be revisiting the character for the small screen but also that they are due to start filming the pilot.
Alongside the post, Gellar captioned: "This picture was taken on the eve of production on the original #cruelintentions. Its me #rogerkumble (director) and #nealmoritz (exec producer) and the other is a picture of us now on the eve of production on the new #cruelintentions.
"That's right 'everybody loves me, and I intend to keep it that way' #kathrynmerteuil is back!!! I am happy to say that I will be joining them (and @nbctv ) on the new #Crueltv".
In the original film, which was based on the 1782 novel Les Liaisons Dangereuses, Gellar's deceitful character was left humiliated after it emerged that instead of being the pure and chaste teen she had staged herself to be, she was in fact a drug user who indulged in mind games and caused the death of her step-brother Sebastian Valmont (Ryan Philippe).
It is safe to conclude from looking at both of the snapshots that Gellar shared, that the Buffy The Vampire Slayer star has changed quite a bit from her early days as the Queen Of Mean 17 years ago, however fans who are concerned as to how authentic the TV show will be to the original picture need not worry – there will have been some time passed in the storyline since then and the upcoming pilot.
The new series will reportedly be set 15 years after the events of the first movie – thankfully ignoring what happened in the panned straight-to-DVD sequels – as her character attempts to take control of the family business, Valmont International.
Along the way, Kathryn decides to win the affections of Bash Casey, the son of late Sebastian Valmont and Annette Hargrove (played by Reese Witherspoon in the film). Now married to a wealthy husband, she spends her days running a youth-rehabilitation movement and getting involved in a private school.
However, the arrival of both her nephew and her mother soon set her plans for dominating the company in motion; a plan made easier when Bash discovers his father's legacy in a hidden journal and is introduced to the same world of wealth, power, sex and corruption.
Currently, there is no word on when the show will be broadcast but if filming starts on 26 February, it might well be sometime later in 2016.
