Selena Gomez turns producer, questions America's politics in her new Netflix documentary
"Living Undocumented" is about the life of migrants, who live in the fear of detention and the scare of getting wiped off.
Selena Gomez has become the voice of American migrants. Reflecting on the fragile political scenario of America she came up with her documentary titled, "Living Undocumented". The first trailer of the Netflix documentary is out and gives us enough hint of the condition of the migrants and their helplessness in front of law.
The new Netflix documentary has six-episodes and the 27-year-old singer and songwriter Selena Gomez is the executive producer of the show. Emmy award-winning producers Aaron Saidman and Eli Holzman have produced the documentary series for Netflix. "Living Undocumented" focuses on the life of migrants who live in the fear of detention and the scare of getting deported.
The documentary is about eight migrant families who face the threat of deportation. It shows their journey from the harrowing to the hopeful. Their journeys are captured to illuminate the complex US immigration system. The families are the voices of many who are trying to fulfill their dream of being an American.
"I chose to produce this series, Living Undocumented, because over the past few years, the word immigrant has seemingly become a negative word," said Gomez, speaking to Deadline. She added that through her documentary, she wants to show what it is like to be an undocumented citizen in the country and she was thankful to the courageous immigrants who shared their stories with the team.
Producer Saidman said: "Living Undocumented is designed to illuminate one of the most important issues of our time." He added that instead of focussing on the statistics, policy debates, they wanted the viewers to get a first-hand information from the migrants themselves.
Since the time Donald Trump too charge at the White House, things have become very difficult for immigrants, especially for those hailing from Mexico. Recently, the Supreme Court allowed the administration to make rules to stop granting asylum to the Mexican immigrants.
"We don't know what we need to do to just be given the simple luxury of living in our home," says a migrant in the trailer of the documentary. Another says that she wasn't blessed to be born in this country but her heart is American.
The documentary will premiere on Netflix on Wednesday, October 2.
