Sevilla do not regret Federico Fazio's January return despite Tottenham loanee's struggles
Sevilla sporting director Monchi has claimed that he doesn't regret the January return of Federico Fazio, despite the fact the Tottenham defender has failed to make the impact expected in his second spell at the Andalucian outfit. The club chief, meanwhile, has played down speculations linking them with a summer move for Manchester City winger Jesus Navas.
The 29-year-old defender agreed a loan move to the Sanchez Pizjuan until the end of the campaign after he failed to make the impact expected during his one and a half seasons at White Hart Lane. The deal then looked a perfect move for Sevilla after they sold him to Spurs in the summer of 2014 for €10 million (£7.9m, $11.3).
However, Fazio has since struggled to replicate his previous form at Sevilla and it looks unlikely the Spaniards will try to keep him at the Sanchez Pizjuan ahead of next season. The Argentinian has only made six appearances under Unai Emery during the second part of the season, despite only two campaigns ago being a crucial player for the Basque manager.
Monchi insists that the deal make sense in January but believes that Fazio has struggled to rediscover his form due to his long time out of action at Tottenham, as he only made one appearance in the Capital One Cup defeat against Arsenal for Pochettino during the first part of the campaign.
Questioned about whether he regrets his return to Sevilla during the January transfer window, Monchi said to Canal Sur: "No, when we bet for Fede, there where little margin in the market. He is a player we knew. Obviously being out for a year hasn't helped him and he's struggled to return to the ideal form to play. In fact Unai has chosen Rami (Daniel) Carriço and Kolo ahead of him. It's a bet we did. We thought it was the ideal and what the team needed and I can't say much more."
Reports in Spain, meanwhile, have claimed that Sevilla are considering to lure Navas back to the Sanchez Pizjuan in the summer amid his uncertain future at Manchester City with Pep Guardiola.
But Monchi said: "Some people are saying that Guardiola isn't counting on him for next season and others who say he is. My information is that City are happy with him there and that he's got a year left on his contract."
