Overview
Southampton have managed just one win in the league this season, which came against Premier League newcomers Norwich City. The Saints settled for a goalless draw in their last fixture when they took on West Bromwich Albion. They have scored only five league goals, out of which three were against Norwich. Ronald Koeman will be hoping his side can find the back of the net when they face the Red Devils. Midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin left the south coast club and made a switch to Old Trafford. It will be the first time the France international will return to St Mary's Stadium since his summer exit.
United suffered a 2-1 defeat to PSV Eindhoven in the last fixture. It was not just the result which was disappointing, but a horrific injury to Luke Shaw during the game forced the left-back to be stretchered off the field. The former Saints defender is set to miss most of the season due to a double fracture. Louis van Gaal has a tough choice to make when he selects his left-back for the clash against Southampton.
What managers say
Ronald Koeman: "I hope the reaction to [Schneiderlin] is a positive one. He did everything for the club, he had a great time in Southampton and was ready for the next step. I think we have to receive the player like we normally do with other players. How the fans react to Rickie Lambert is what you expect of fans receiving those who did everything for the club in a very positive way, I hope."
Louis van Gaal: "They have a very good team. I don't think their current position is a normal position for them. It was a minor injury, we didn't want to take any risks. Now he [Rooney] has had his treatment and training sessions, so now I think he can start."
