Overview
Wawrinka , the World No 4, has not had the best of starts to 2016 but has two titles to his name: the Chennai Open and the Dubai Duty-Free Tennis crown.
The Swiss international has a solid record at the Rome Masters, reaching the semi-final last year only to lose to Roger Federer. Wawrinka is placed in the less packed bottom half of the draw which might see him avoid the big three of Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal and Federer until the semi-final at least.
Paire has had a good start to the season reaching the semi-final of four ATP world tour tournaments. He also came close to beating Andy Murray in the third round of the Monte Carlo Masters.
Ranked No 21, Paire has won three of his last eight matches against top10 players and is playing on his favourite surface which is clay.
