Stanley Kubrick's indomitable science fiction classic 2001: A Space Odyssey is returning to cinemas next month and in anticipation, the British Film Institute (BFI) have released a new trailer.

Screenings are taking place at the BFI between from 28 to 30 November as part of a new sci-fi season put together by the organisation.

Released in 1968, Kubrick's mysterious epic has gone on to become a true classic of cinema that remains eminently watchable thanks to its spectacular visuals and ability to burrow its ideas and themes into your brain.

Many still debate the film to this day, giving it the mythic quality of 2001's own black monoliths.

The film stars Keir Dullea as Dr Dave Bowman, an astronaut embarking on a lengthy space journey after humanity discovers a monolith on the Lunar surface. He's accompanied by the intelligent H.A.L 9000 computer, which isn't entirely helpful to say the least.

Intense, creepy and mind-blowing in the best sense, 2001 is one of an elite few films that are never truly seen until witnessed on the big screen.

The trailer ends with a quote from film-maker and Kubrick fan Christopher Nolan, whose own forthcoming sci-fi Interstellar inspired the BFI's sci-fi season and was itself inspired by 2001.
