Suicide Squad's David Ayer to direct Will Smith in upcoming supernatural thriller Bright
After recently working together on Warner Bros. upcoming DC film Suicide Squad, director David Ayer has signed on to team up with actor Will Smith again for fantastical cop thriller Bright. Looks like the pair are taking the phrase 'squad goals' pretty seriously after all!
The Gift's Joel Edgerton is also in talks to star, while Max Landis (American Ultra, Chronicle) has penned the latest screenplay. While not much is known about the script so far, the plot will reportedly follow the career of a policeman with magical elements such as Orc-like creatures and fairies added into the story for good measure.
Landis took to Twitter last month to share glowing remarks about Ayer's recent rewrite of his original speculative screenplay, saying: "Ayer translating a whole script of mine into Ayer-sian is a huge bizarre honor". He went on to admit that afterward, looking back at it was "like reading the same script from an alternate dimension."
The movie promises to present something quite different to the average crime-based thriller and it certainly sounds like it will so far. Warner Bros. is expected to eventually fund the project, although no deal has been made yet as sources say Sony is also in the mix.
Before Bright makes it to the big-screen however, Smith will of course be seen first in anti-hero action movie Suicide Squad which reaches both UK and US cinemas on 5 August. He is currently filming David Frankel drama Collateral Beauty alongside Keira Knightley and Kate Winslet.
Edgerton will next star in Western Jane Got A Gun with Natalie Portman and sci-fi drama Midnight Special with Star Wars: The Force Awakens' Adam Driver. As for Landis, he'll next be writing the screenplay for Lionsgate's Power Rangers movie ahead of its release in 2017.
