Team GB judoka Alice Schlesinger suffers Rio heartbreak in defeat to Anicka van Emden
Schlesinger falls at last 16 stage in cruel circumstances.
Team GB judoka Alice Schlesinger has seen her Rio 2016 campaign ended after defeat to Anicka van Emden of Netherlands in the last 16 stage.
Israel-born Schlesinger had earlier progressed into the second round of the 63kg category in Rio with victory over Jiyun Bak of South Korea on Tuesday (9 August) afternoon.
The 28-year-old booked her place in the next round with an ippon, the highest score possible in judo, ending the match in impressive fashion.
A spot in the last eight beckoned when she took on Van Emden later in the afternoon, but her Rio campaign ended in heartbreak after a narrow defeat where a penalty for stepping off the mat 15 seconds into the contest proved decisive.
Schlesinger won what could have been a vital point half through the contest, one which would have helped her recover from that earlier penalty. The referee however reversed their decision and took the point away, leaving the Briton with an uphill battle, and Van Emden impressively fended her opponent off.
