This photo sums up how the Pope really feels about meeting Donald Trump
A hilarious photo of the encounter is gaining traction on social media.
Donald Trump has met Pope Francis at the Vatican on the latest leg of his first overseas trip as US President – and a hilarious snap of the encounter is going viral.
Their private meeting was described as "cordial" in a statement by the Holy See – but the pontiff's facial expression in a group photo with the Trumps suggests otherwise.
The contrast between Donald Trump and the Pope is nothing short of comical. As the president grins awkwardly next to Melania, Pope Francis looks – quite frankly – dejected.
The Associated Press photo was shared to Twitter by journalist Louise Burke and is doing the rounds on social media, with many users pointing out the difference between the Pope's meeting with Trump and his encounter with Barack Obama.
The President and the Pope spoke privately for around 20 minutes. The two men have already clashed on issues in the past, including climate change and migration, and the Vatican said after the meeting that there has been an "exchange of views" on several issues.
After the meeting, Trump and the Pope exchanged gifts. The President offered a set of writings by the civil rights leader Martin Luther King and the Pope gave Trump a signed copy of a message he delivered for World Peace Day, which the President said he would read.
