Tom Daley documentary reveals 'intimate' details about career and personal life before Rio 2016
ITV showcases the 22-year-old's preparation and his gay relationship with Dustin Lance Black.
He shot to international fame after winning the bronze medal for Great Britain in the individual diving competition at the 2012 Summer Olympic Games, has openly come out as gay and featured in ITV reality show Splash!, and now Tom Daley is to star in a documentary about his life.
The 22-year-old sportsman from Plymouth has achieved a great deal in his short career, winning the attention of the media after winning two gold medals for England at the 2010 Commonwealth Games. In sync with the 2016 Olympics, his career and personal life will be laid bare in a new feature documentary by ITV.
The film, called Tom Daley: Diving For Gold, will reflect on the last four years of Daley's life in the limelight following his Olympic success where he garnered great interest among the British public as a rising star and somewhat of a heartthrob.
After he was approached by ITV to feature in the diving reality series Splash! – which debuted in 2013 – he was regarded a national celebrity. The ITV programme will no doubt document his famous YouTube video, also from 2013, which revealed to fans that he was in a same-sex relationship with US screen writer Dustin Lance Black. The pair have since announced their wedding engagement.
It will also show Daley's preparations between 2012-2016 as he gears up for the next Olympic Games in Brazil, along with the help and guidance from new coach, Jane Figueiredo.
Amanda Stavri, entertainment commissioner at ITV, said: "Tom is one of Britain's best-loved athletes and I can't wait for viewers to see his journey to once again compete in the ultimate level of sporting competition. We'll follow his highs and the lows as well as discovering new insights into both Tom's sporting and personal life."
Neil Edwards, a senior executive producer at production company Twofour, said: "It's a privilege to have such intimate access to one of Britain's best loved and most talented Olympians. Tom's four-year journey from London 2012 to Rio 2016 is the latest gripping chapter in a story we've all been following since he burst into the public consciousness as a young boy," he added.
Tom Daley: Diving For Gold will air later this summer in time for his participation in Rio 2016.
