Tom Gabel, Lead Singer of Against Me!, Comes Out as Transgendered and Plans to Become Woman Named Laura
Tom Gabel, the lead singer of punk band Against Me!, has revealed he is transgender and planning to become a woman called Laura Jane Grace.
In an interview with Rolling Stone magazine, Gabel, 31, said he is planning to take hormones and undergo electrolysis treatments and is considering gender reassignment surgery to complete the transformation.
Gabel disclosed that he has been suffering with gender dysphoria for years and has felt disconnected with his body since he was a child.
The singer said he is not attracted to men and will remain married to his wife Heather, with whom he has a two-year-old daughter.
He told the magazine: "For me, the most terrifying thing about this was how she would accept the news. But she's been super-amazing and understanding."
Gabel said he decided to be open about his condition because he is the first major rock star to come out as transgender.
"I'm going to have embarrassing moments and that won't be fun," he admitted.
"But that's part of what talking to you is about - is hoping people will understand, and hoping they'll be fairly kind."
On The Ocean, the closing track on Against Me!'s 2007 major label debut New Wave, Gabel sings: "If I could have chosen, I would have been born a woman/My mother once told me she would have named me Laura/ I'd grow up to be strong and beautiful like her."
Against Me! formed in 1997, when Gabel was 17, and released their fifth album White Crosses in 2010.
