Andre Villas-Boas Sacked by Tottenham Hotspur

Andre Villas-Boas has left Tottenham Hotspur by mutual consent, the club have announced.

The Portuguese boss's position at White Hart Lane was under severe scrutiny following the club's 5-0 defeat at the hands of Liverpool on Sunday, their second heavy defeat to a potential top four rival in less than a month.

A statement released by Tottenham read: "The club can announce that agreement has been reached with head coach, Andre Villas-Boas, for the termination of his services. The decision was by mutual consent and in the interests of all parties.

Villas-Boas, appointed Harry Redknapp's successor in the summer of 2012 was met by a chorus of boos following yesterday's defeat in north London.

Alongside the club's technical director Franco Baldini and chairman Daniel Levy, Villas-Boas oversaw a summer spending spree that exceeded £100m as the club sought to simultaneously fill the void left by Gareth Bale and strengthen their claims for a Champions League spot

Questions of the former Chelsea's manager's position in north London where asked when his side were thrashed 6-0 to Manchester City in November. Despite stringing two wins and a draw together since that hammering at the Etihad, Sunday's defeat to Brendan Rodgers' side has proven to be the last straw.

Having come within a point of winning a coveted Champions League spot last season, Spurs were pipped by north London rivals Arsenal on the final day of last campaign. Following the world record sale of Bale to Real Madrid, the club proceeded to substantially strengthen their teams in order to launch an assault on the top four this year, shattering their record transfer fee three times in the space of two months as they added six new faces to their first team squad.

Despite a relatively bright start to the campaign, the club have faltered throughout the last three months. In addition to their heavy losses to Liverpool and Manchester City, Spurs also suffered a a loss 3-0 West Ham United and a 1-0 loss to Newcastle United at home, having also lost out in the first north London derby of the season back in September.

Russia national team coach Fabio Capello has been quickly linked as a possible replacement after the former England coach was spotted at White Hart Lane during yesterday's game.
