Tottenham Hotspur 1-2 Southampton: Barclays Premier League as it happened
- Brace from Steven Davis moves Southampton up to sixth
- Tottenham in danger of losing second place to Arsenal
- Ronald Koeman's side fought back from 1-0 down after Son's opener
Tottenham's week goes from bad to worse. Defeat today means that Arsenal can still nick second place of them, depending on how the Gunners get on in their remaining two games. Southampton meanwhile are ending the season brilliantly, they move up to sixth and have a Europa League spot within their grasp.
So close from Chadli! Eriksen pings the free kick into the box that bounces off Wanyama and into the Belgian's path, but Forster leaps across to make a superb block.
Tottenham keep pressed in the final third and Kane tries his luck from range, but his dipping effort is off target. That might be that,
Eriksen whacks another hopeful ball into the box but it's another poor ball that is easily cleared. It allows Long to break but with no one ahead of him, pauses for support, shifting the ball along to Ward-Prowse. He hits a wonderfully clean strike across goal that looks like it might fly into the top corner, but in the end it veers over the cross bar.
Kane jinks past a couple of challenges inside the box, cutting back out again as he shapes to shoot but is felled by a challenge from Oriol. There are a few appeals for a foul, but nothing is given.
Southampton respond by punting the ball down for Long to chase onto and it's a race between him and Lloris to see who will get their first. The goalkeeper does, but is sent tumbling by the Republic of Ireland international, who really couldn't get out of the way there. He's shown a yellow card anyway.
Southampton take the lead through Davis! After playing a one two with Tadic, the Northern Ireland international skips past a couple of weak challenges and drives a low effort into the bottom corner. Precise effort from the Saints midfielder and suddenly Tottenham's second place finish isn't looking so assured.
Tottenham lose the ball in midfield and invite Mane to break down the right. He tries to scoop the ball into the Long inside the box but Alderweireld can clear.
Tottenham don;t have it back for long however and Tadic can come forward, looking for Long again inside the box. This time he gets his head to the ball, but nods wide of the far post. Great chance passed up by the Republic of Ireland international.
An exciting first half saw Tottenham take the lead through Son Heung-min, who capitalised on a moment of hesitation from Fraser Forster to roll the ball into the back of an empty net.
The home side looked in control but some slack defending from both Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld allowed Steven Davis to equalise, with an effort that Hugo Lloris should have also done better with.
Southampton are level! Tottenham's centre halves been among the league's best this season but both were culpable here. Tadic pulls away inside the box, inviting Vertonghen over and turns him easily to cut a cross into Davis inside the six yard area.
Alderweireld is standing a couple of yards off his man and the Saints midfielder meets the ball with an instinctive finish, slotting underneath Lloris. The Tottenham goalkeeper should perhaps do better there.
Get rid! Rose makes a brilliant sliding interception in his own box but then tries to dribble his way out of trouble. He's surrounded by Saints players and has the ball robbed from him and the ball breaks to Mane. There are four of his teammates inside the six yard area waiting for the cross but it doesn't beat the first man and Spurs clear.
No hangover from the Chelsea game here for Tottenham, they lead after 15 minutes! Eriksen prods a neat ball through that Kane, who is standing in an offside position, leaves for Son. Forster hesitates slightly and that invites the South Korean to spring onto the loose ball, managing to turn the Saints goalkeeper and keep the ball alive. Kane is in the middle, but Son keeps his cool, darting inside and slotting into an empty net.
Great save from Forster! Excellent move from Tottenham started by Alderweireld, who switches play wonderfully to find Rose racing down the left flank. His first touch is spot on and can drift inside Martina to knock a ball across goal for Eriksen, but the Dane's effort is kept out by the Southampton goalkeeper.
Toby Alderweireld, despite appearing to pick up a slight knock against Chelsea, starts against his former club this afternoon. Clinton N'Jie, the club's summer signing from Lyon, features in a match day squad for the first time this year after suffering a knee ligament injury in December 2015.
As expected, Ronald Koeman has kept to the same side that hammered Manchester City last time out.
BREAKING: Ryan Mason comes in for the suspended Mousa Dembele while Son holds onto his spot in the absence of Dele Alli. Clinton N'Jie takes a spot on the bench.
Tottenham team to face Southampton: Lloris (c), Walker, Alderweireld, Vertonghen, Rose; Dier, Mason; Lamela, Eriksen, Son; Kane
Subs: Vorm, Davies, Wimmer, Carroll, Chadli, Winks, Clinton
This season will be remembered for Leicester's triumph, but Tottenham's own transformation into title challengers is itself a remarkable story, compared to where they were just three years ago.
While we wait for confirmation of this afternoon's teams, here is our piece on the changes at Tottenham that have finally seen them become one of the Premier League's elite.
While Arsenal are breathing down their necks, a win for Tottenham this afternoon will effectively see them clinch second place. An Arsenal victory today will keep them within touching distance of their neighbours ahead of the final round of games next weekend, but Tottenham's goal difference, +14 ahead of kick off, will keep them out of their reach.
As mentioned, Mousa Dembele has been handed a six-game ban by the FA for gouging Diego Costa's eyes in Spurs' 2-2 draw against Chelsea on Monday night (2 May). The 28-year-old Belgian was involved in an angry confrontation with the Spanish striker during the game at Stamford Bridge and subsequently accepted the charge levelled against him.
Dembele's action were not spotted by the matchday officials, but were caught on video camera. Consequently, the FA decided to take retrospective action against the player.
Team news: Southampton
Saints have no fresh injury problems to contend with so Ronald Koeman could name the same XI that thrashed Manchester City last week. Graziano Pelle was left out of last week's squad amid ongoing uncertainty over his future at the club, but with Shane Long and hat-trick hero Sadio Mane in such superb form last week, a spot on the bench might be as good as it gets. Defender Virgil van Dijk signed a new six-year contract at the club this week.
Team news: Tottenham
Spurs are without Dele Alli and Mousa Dembele for the rest of the season with both midfielders serving retrospective bans for violent conduct. Dembele was hit was a six-match ban, which will see him miss the club's first four matches of the 2016-17 season too.
Forgotten midfielder Nabil Bentaleb also remains unavailable with a knee problem but Danny Rose is expected to feature despite picking up a minor knock in the draw with Chelsea.
Tottenham are still licking their wounds after the bruising 2-2 draw with Chelsea last Monday that saw them surrender their Premier League title challenge to Leicester City. But at least they still have bragging rights in north London, right? For now they do. Arsenal sit just three points behind their neighbours and while Tottenham's vastly superior goal difference will come in handy, Mauricio Pochettino's side cannot afford to end their campaign with a whimper. With a squad depleted by suspensions, they could have their work cut out for them.
Pochettino's former employers will be looking to add to their woes this week. Southampton are still in the hunt for Europa League qualification and an exhilarating 4-2 win over Manchester City last Sunday showed they are still very much up for the fight.
