Harry Kane

A mostly comfortable victory for Spurs, but they had to endure a few nervy moments late on.

That is it from me, but be sure to check back in with IBTimes UK tomorrow for live coverage of Leicester City vs Manchester United.

There is also the small matter of an Africa Cup of Nations final between Egypt and Cameroon in the Gabonese capital of Libreville.

Goodnight.

Full-time

Tottenham 1-0 Middlesbrough

Negredo's hopeful late shot is blocked by Dembele. Harry Winks, who came on for Alli during the final throws of normal time, then concedes a free-kick for handball.

Kane's race is run. Vincent Janssen jogs on for the final few moments.

What a chance for Middlesbrough to snatch a point at the death. Fabio's long pass is headed down by Bamford and Negredo flicks the ball on to De Roon, who volleys wide.

He should have hit the target there.

Three minutes of added time for Middlesbrough to find an equaliser or Tottenham to put the game beyond reach.

Lloris, under pressure from Negredo, flaps unconvincingly at another decent cross from the left boot of Fabio. Bamford wins a corner off Davies but Tottenham survive.

This is not quite as comfortable as the home supporters would like.

Middlesbrough are just beginning to ask one or two questions as the clock ticks down towards 90 minutes. Guedioura's lofted pass intended for Negredo is collected by Lloris.

Fabio stands up a cross to the back post and Negredo misses the target with an acrobatic overhead kick. Not a bad effort.

Clattenburg plays a good advantage after Sissoko is felled. Kane picks out Alli and looks to turn home the return ball, but Bernardo is on hand to make a crucial intervention.

Fabio then blocks an Eriksen shot with his elbow.

Middlesbrough are getting a bit stretched now as they try to go in search of an unlikely equaliser. Eriksen dwells on the ball too long and Alli and Kane get in each other's way.

Karanka's final sub sees Bamford replace Traore. Pochettino withdraws the industrious Son in favour of Moussa Sissoko.

Kane engineers a three v two situation, but his initial pass to Alli is too heavy.

The former MK Dons prodigy sill tries to pick out his England teammate, only for Eriksen to get in the way. A promising attack fizzles out.

De Roon cannot guide his header on target after a cross from Traore. Tottenham win another corner when Kane's delivery is deflected behind by Bernardo.

Negredo gets back to fulfill more defensive duties.

Traore will require some medical attention after a mistimed sliding challenge from Davies.

Rudy Gestede and Patrick Bamford are both warming up for Middlesbrough. Which one will Karanka call upon?

Son winces in pain after having his foot trodden on by Chambers. Eriksen's free-kick is headed away by Negredo.

Son takes on Bernardo again before firing into the side netting. Valdes then gratefully intercepts a right-wing centre.

At the other end, Guedioura smashes a shot high into the stands. Dreadful effort.

Karanka responds to that goal by making a double switch. Stuani replaces Downing and Guedioura, a £3.5m deadline day arrival from Watford, comes on for Forshaw.

Trouble for Dier and Forshaw almost finds a way through. Alderweireld is there to mop up.

With relief flooding around the stadium, Tottenham push for a quick second and Valdes makes a fine stop to deny Eriksen.

Ice cool from Kane as he sends Valdes the wrong way and slots his spot-kick into the bottom corner. That's a 16th goal of the season for him.

Harry Kane

Goal: Tottenham 1-0 Middlesbrough (Harry Kane)

Son cuts inside Bernardo with a brilliant touch and is promptly taken down by the Colombian defender.

PENALTY TO TOTTENHAM

Alert defending again from Gibson to see off the danger posed by Wanyama. Eric Dier gets a little shove at the corner, but Clattenburg isn't interested.

Middlesbrough begin to apply some pressure now for the first time in 50-odd minutes. Eriksen concedes a corner from a throw-in, but Lloris remains untroubled.

Kane comes forward for Tottenham and finds Son, who cuts inside and tees up Eriksen.

Middlesbrough swarm to the ball like locusts, but this time the shot gets through and Valdes is forced to make a save low to his left.

Alderweireld tries to pick out Son with a trademark long pass that bobbles out of play. A rare foray forward from Traore is ended by a stellar sliding tackle from Davies.

Son seizes on a frankly rubbish, risky pass from Clayton. The ball works its way from Eriksen to Kane but Bernardo gets across to make another block.

The players have re-emerged from the tunnel and the second half is upon us. No changes from either Pochettino or Karanka just yet.

71% possession for Spurs, who totally dominated that first 45. However, Middlesbrough, to their credit, defended stoutly and limited the hosts to just two shots on goal.

All of those defenders are willing to put their bodies on the line. It's a big ask to keep that up for another half, though. Karanka will be eager for his side to find an out ball and fast.

The visitors should also be down to 10 men after those hot-headed antics from Valdes. That incident will likely interest the FA.

Half-time

Tottenham 0-0 Middlesbrough

Brilliant defending by Fabio da Silva, who defies his diminutive stature to keep a Davies cross away from the head of Kane.

Bernardo then denies the Tottenham striker with yet another block after Middlesbrough concede possession cheaply.

Two minutes of added time will be played at the end of this first half.

Son again tries to engineer an opportunity. The latest Spurs attack ends with Clayton blocking a shot from Wanyama.

Son is the man constantly trying to unlock this Boro backline. Victor Wanyama unleashes a powerful shot that is deflected behind by Forshaw.

Alderweireld can only head Eriksen's corner weakly into the arms of Valdes.

Kane lifts Son's low cross into the roof of the net from close range. His celebrations are instantly cut short by the offside flag, however.

That was definitely the correct decision.

Harry Kane

Son takes on Chambers before slicing a horrible shot well wide. Mousa Dembele also blasts over from distance.

Signs of frustration from Spurs.

Although resolute in defence, Middlesbrough's midfield are having a hard time keeping Alli under wraps. De Roon has his name taken for a blatant shirt pull.

Clever play from Alli, who changes pace at the right moment to coax Adam Clayton into a clumsy foul. Chambers twice gets up to deal with deliveries from Eriksen.

Boro are certainly proving obstinate during this opening 45 minutes. Can they keep it up?

Bernardo blocks an Eriksen drive. Tottenham come again with some up-tempo one-touch passing and a delicious cross from Son is headed narrowly over by Kane.

That was a real chance to break the deadlock.

Chambers thwarts Son this time and Valdes punches clear another Eriksen corner. The former Barcelona and Manchester United goalkeeper has little trouble in catching a deflected long-range effort from Kane.

Still goalless after 30 minutes at White Hart Lane. It's been mostly one-way traffic so far, but Middlesbrough are holding firm.

Son works his way to the byline and a poor front-post cross is easily cut out by the impressive Ben Gibson.

Lloris lets a cross slip through his hands. Alderweireld gets around to cover, but the whistle has already gone for a foul by Negredo.

Valdes and Chambers keep Tottenham at bay before Alderweireld heads Eriksen's latest corner against the outside of the post.

Alli finds Walker with a sumptuous flick and only some strong defending from Bernardo stops Kane from meeting the right-back's cross.

Chambers makes three clearances in quick succession and Traore strides forward on the counter. He wins a free-kick off Kane and Adam Forshaw ends up shooting well wide.

Television replays appear to show that Valdes twice pushed Alli in the face before that corner was taken.

If the referee sees that, then it's a red card. The Spaniard can count himself very lucky indeed.

A disappointing corner from Christian Eriksen is booted clear at the front post by Marten De Roon.

Undeterred, the Dane splits Boro's defence with a sublime low pass and Alli shoots into the side netting.

Dele Alli

Harry Kane comes within a whisker of turning home Davies' cross. It's been a lively start in north London.

Spurs break quickly through Alli and Heung-min Son forces a smart low save from Victor Valdes.

Middlesbrough soak up a bit of early pressure before creating a chance on the counter-attack. Adama Traore bamboozles Toby Alderweireld and produces an inviting cross that is headed over the crossbar by Alvaro Negredo.

Mark Clattenburg gets the last game of the day off and running.

Tottenham will kick from right to left in this first half, with Middlesbrough, now perched just one point above the relegation zone following Hull's win over Liverpool, sporting their navy blue away strips.

Arsenal loanee Calum Chambers returns for 'Boro following a stress fracture of the foot, with Antonio Barragan dropping out of the matchday squad altogether. Cristhian Stuani also makes way for Stewart Downing.

George Friend and Gaston Ramirez remain out. New arrival Adlene Guedioura could make his debut from the bench.

Mauricio Pochettino makes two changes to the side that were held to a goalless draw by Sunderland on deadline day. Hugo Lloris has recovered from illness and replaces Michel Vorm, while Ben Davies deputises for Danny Rose.

The England left-back injured his knee on Wearside and now joins Jan Vertonghen, Kieran Trippier, Erik Lamela and Georges-Kevin Nkoudou on the sidelines.
