Overview

The opening stage of the marquee cycling event ended on a disappointing note for Mark Cavendish of Team Omega Pharma-Quick Step who crashed into Australia's Simon Gerrans while trying to usher him out of his line in the final 500 metres.

The 29-year-old's Tour de France campaign looked to have ended with a suspected collarbone injury. The situation is still unclear as to whether Cavendish can continue after the team doctor allayed fears of a fracture.

Home favourite Christopher Froome of Team Sky finished sixth. Kittel being the winner wears the Yellow Jersey coming into the second stage. He also picked up the Green Jersey for having the most points.

Peter Sagan, who was eligible to wear Green as he stood second, will wear the White Jersey as the leader in the Young Rider classification. So, Bryan Coquard, who finished fourth, will be wearing the Green Jersey.

Jens Voigt claimed the Polka dot jersey after finishing with most points in the mountain runs.

Last year's stage two winner Jan Bakelants finished 110 places behind Kittel.
