After the success of Transformers: Age of Extinction, fans were anxious to know more about its sequel, Transformers 5.

However, recent news of the movie director Michael Bay and actor Mark Wahlberg having opted out of the blockbuster franchise has left fans wondering about the future of their favourite live action thriller movie.

A report from Cinema Blend suggests that the highly anticipated movie may be a crossover of Transformers and G.I. Joe.

Though it sounds interesting to see Dwayne Johnson (aka The Rock) and Bruce Willis fighting along with Optimus Prime against the army of Galvatron, the idea appears to be far from possible.

"I don't think [it's] in the near future at all," movie producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura said in an interview with Total Film.

"It's not something we talk about either. There's a lot more story to be told in both cases. And I think if at some moment we think, 'You know what? It's time to bring the two of them together, we'll do that. But I think they're strong enough to exist on their own."

After Bay's exit, Paramount Pictures is currently looking for a director to helm the fan favourite movie.

Meanwhile, there are numerous rumours about the plot of the movie sequel suggesting that Optimus Prime may roam around space in order to search for the Creators while Maximals, the descendants of the Autobots and the Predacons, the descendants of the Decepticons, will have a showdown on earth.

The production house, however, is yet to confirm about the Bay and Wahlberg's exit from the popular franchise while rumours are abuzz that transformers alum Megan Fox may return to the fifth instalment to reprise her role.

Transformers 5 is expected to be released in 2016.
