Trayvon Martin Death: Teenagers Re-enact Death for 'Trayvoning' Trend
Disturbing new meme that mocks corpse image of George Zimmerman shooting victim goes viral on Twitter, Instagram and Tumblr
A disturbing new internet meme making light of Trayvon Martin's death has sparked outrage in the wake of George Zimmerman's acquittal of the fatal shooting of the unarmed teenager.
"Trayvoning", which has been described as the new "planking" or "Tebowing", sees teenagers re-enact Trayvon Martin's death photo - for entertainment.
They lie face down on the ground next to a can of soft drink and a bag of Skittles - the items found alongside the body of Trayvon after the shooting.
While planking encouraged people to produce photographs of themselves face down with stiffened arms and legs in ridiculous locations, Tebowers entertained viewers by getting down on one knee and praying in public places in mock homage to American football star Tim Tebow.
The Trayvoning images have appeared on Twitter, Instagram, and Tumblr but have angered many in the online community.
"This is disgusting,"one user said.
"If I were the parent of any of these kids, or their teacher, or scout leader, or whatever, I would take them to visit Trayvon's mom and see if they think it's funny after that."
Another wrote: "Are they doing it to be funny or are they doing it to keep this in the news and heighten the sense of insanity from the result?"
"Wtf is this madness? Jesus. Poor parenting and lack of basic human decency is the issue. Dumbass," a third critic added.
Zimmerman was found not guilty of murder and manslaughter after a jury of six women jurors accepted his claim that he shot Trayvon in self-defence.
Protests have been held across country following the verdict. Trayvon's parents, Sybrina Fulton and Tracy Martin, were "heartbroken and devastated," their lawyer said.
