Trump's references to Hitler and Nazism caricatured in Iran cartoon contest

US President Donald Trump has come in for scathing treatment at a cartoon contest conducted by an Iranian organisation, with some of the works highlighting Trump's references to Hitler and Nazism. The contest has drawn as many as 1,600 entries from more than 70 countries.

The International Trumpism Cartoon and Caricature Contest was similar to Iran's infamous annual Holocaust cartoon competition. "Trump's behaviour clearly sets out Iran's reasons to distrust the US, consequently, we decided to use art's capacity for displaying the behaviour," the contest's director Ali-Asghar Jafari said.

Iranian cartoonist Hadi Asadi won the first prize on Monday, 3 July, in the contest backed by Iran's so-called Organisation for Sacred Defence Artistic and Cinema Affairs. Asadi's cartoon showed Trump, a billionaire, clad in a suit of money with his hair ablaze.

He was awarded $1,500 along with a trophy and a plaque. "I wanted to show Trump while trampling symbols of culture," Asadi said after collecting his award.

Entries included a diaper-clad baby Trump scribbling on a miniature White House. Twitter, Trump's favourite social media, was also prominent in many of the cartoons. Even the logo of the competition closely resembled the Nazi emblem.

"This contest considers Trump as a symbol of US capitalism and hegemony that many intellectuals compare with Nazism," one of the organisers of the event, Masud Shojaei-Tabatabai, said.
