Twitter reacts over Simone Biles leading Team USA as flag-bearer at Rio Olympics closing ceremony
The gymnast bagged five medals at the Rio 2016 Olympics.
Simone Biles was Team USA's flag-bearer during the closing ceremony of the Rio 2016 Olympics on Sunday (21 August). The 19-year-old, who was taking part in her first Olympics, impressed in the Summer Games by bagging five medals – four golds and a bronze. She has become the first gymnast in the world to win four gold medals in an Olympics since 1984. Biles also made history by becoming the first gymnast from her country to achieve the feat.
Team USA members selected Biles to be the flag-bearer at the Maracana Stadium. Alfred Jochim was the previous gymnast who was a flag-bearer for the US team in 1936. Now, 80 years on, Biles made history when she was given the opportunity.
Biles expressed her delight on leading the Team USA. She also went on to thank the host city, Rio de Janeiro for putting up an "incredible" show.
"It's an incredible honor to be selected as the flag bearer by my Team USA teammates," Biles told TeamUSA.org.
"This experience has been the dream of a lifetime for me and my team and I consider it a privilege to represent my country, the United States Olympic Committee and USA Gymnastics by carrying our flag.
"I also wish to thank the city of Rio de Janeiro, and the entire country of Brazil, for hosting an incredible Games," she said.
