U.S. Consulate in Berlin Cleared After Suspicious Envelope Found
The U.S. Consulate in Berlin has reported finding an envelope today, containing a strange smelling white powder, prompting a full scale evacuation of the embassy.
Emergency services were called immediately to the incident and the fire crew turned up with full safety apparatus kit on to investigate the package. A female employee reported feeling ill with breathing difficulties and is undergoing treatment.
The building was evacuated and shocked staff stood nearby waiting for news.
A spokeswoman said the smell came from an envelope containing supporting materials for a visa application given to consular employees by the applicant in person Thursday morning. She added that she had no immediate information on the status of the person who brought the envelope in and that investigations were carrying on.
