Uefa Champions League as it happened: Manchester City 1-2 Barcelona, Juventus 2-1 Borussia Dortmund
Bar an unfortunate/hilarious late miss from Lionel Messi, that couldn't have gone better for Barcelona. A dominant away performance from them leaves them in control of this tie with Luis Suarez scoring twice on the night.
Manuel Pellegrini's formation in the first half was woefully ineffective, and while they rallied in the second, a red card to Gael Clichy saw Barcelona end the tie as it started; in utter control.
City are all over the place at the back for a moment as Rakitic and Neymar swap passes before the latter overhits one towards the near post. Somehow, Messi plucks the ball out of the air and keeps it in play. He tries to slide on across goal but the chance eventually disappears for good as Iniesta's effort deflects into the arms of Hart.

Some second half resolve from City and you could argue they should be level. Nasri, Dzeko and Aguero have all gone close amid a dramatically improved City showing.
Barcelona still playing football from another galaxy when they have the ball and Messi and co will keep the defence interested throughout, but City surely have to sacrifice losing this tie tonight in order to have a chance of winning it."
Aguero comes within inches of pulling one back! Silva starts the attack with an excellent sliding challenge that frees his teammate in the final third. He advances menacingly and with his marker standing off, tries to curl one into the far corner from the edge of the box. Ter Stegan dives desperately across but the ball is veering just wide anyway.
Aguero is first to a rare stray pass and springs forward as City find some menace for the first time in a while. He sprays the ball wide to Dzeko before continuing his run into the box but Dzeko is going nowhere thanks a perfect sliding challenge from Pique. Silva tries to retrieve the loose ball but is judged to have fouled Alves in the process.

On a day when the Premier League has been made to look greedy and spoilt, the champions of the self-professed best league in the world have been made to look distinctly average by a virtuoso display from Barcelona.
"Two Luis Suarez goals have the visitors ahead and had it not been for Joe Hart and Pablo Zabaleta, this tie could be have been consigned a write-off after 35 minutes.
"As it is City are (only) on a life support machine in this game thank to Suarez's second, a brilliant goal which saw Barcelona from walking pace to 100 miles an hour in a blink, s Alba crossed for the Uruguayan. Fine goal."
Suarez has a second but it's absolutely magical from Messi in the build up. On the edge of the D he receives the ball from Rakitic and bursts through three or four City defenders with bewildering strength and skill before slipping a pass through the narrowest of gaps into Alba whose emerged to his left. He pings it across goal where Suarez reacts quickest to prod home.

It's been a nervy, edgy start from the champions of England and that start has been capped by an error-strewn opening goal after a quarter of an hour.
"Lionel Messi's cross is flicked on by Suarez and when Kompany can't clear and the ball merely rebounds off him, the Uruguay forward reacts first to bang past Joe Hart.
"The nerves were palpable inside the Etihad Stadium before the goal, but they're now prevalent within every City fans after that early, tie-changing goal."
Barcelona take the lead in ruthless fashion. Messi pops up on the right and tries to hook the ball into the box. Suarez, on the right hand edge of the box tries to knock it on but it takes a lucky bounce of Kompany whose stood behind him and falls perfectly at the feet of the Uruguayan, who sweeps a fine effort into the bottom corner.

"Plenty of debate over what legs remain in this Barcelona team led by a fourth different manager in as many seasons in Luis Enrique.
"Eleven straight wins prior to defeat against Malaga, a three-pronged attack in Lionel Messi, Neymar and Luis Suarez and the fact that Xavi only makes the bench tonight, should give you some indication as to the threat the Catalans still possess.
"Having said that, after last term's failure to win a trophy and the improvement of many of Europe's biggest sides, Barca no doubt arrive at the Etihad Stadium with their reputation somewhat damaged. It would be typical of their institution if they produced a masterclass tonight."
Manuel Pellegrini has picked a bold, 442 this evening. That probably says it all about ther Chilean's intentions tonight as City look to secure a commanding position in this tie tonight.
One note of caution for City; Sergio Aguero, Edin Dzeko, Gael Clichy and Pablo Zabaleta are a booking away from missing the return leg at the Nou Camp.

Manuel Pellegrini could have been accused of falling foul of conservatism for the visit of Barcelona 12 months ago, but his starting eleven tonight sees the Chilean revert to the enterprise which delivered the title last season.
"Sergio Aguero, David Silva, Samir Nasri and Edin Dzeko all start in a genuine 4-4-2 from the hosts in a team that though without Yaya Toure will not leave anyone wondering what their approach will be tonight.
"Barcelona don't spring any surprises with their team in a side that shows just three changes from the side that won 2-0 at the Etihad Stadium last season. Marc-Andre ter Stegen, Ivan Rakitic and Luis Suarez are the new faces."

For all their troubles domestically, Dortmund looked at ease in Europe in group stage of the competition.

City's group form in this competition continued to puzzle last year. A home defeat to Bayern Munich in their first game? Understandable. A 1-1 draw to Roma two weeks later? Not great, but by no means disgraceful. Surrendering a 2-0 lead to CSKA Moscow to draw 2-2, before losing at home to the Russian side? What's all that about? City saved themselves a humiliating exit in fine circumstances however and their wins over Bayern and Roma in their final two games ensure they deserve to be here this evening.
A 4-1 defeat at this stage of the competition last season saw Manchester City's miserable European record continue. They face the same opposition tonight in Barcelona but given the dramatic circumstances in which they secured their place in the last 16 a few months ago, being here is a miracle in itself.
Two goals in five minutes from Sergio Aguero lifted Manuel Pellegrini's side from 2-1 down to 3-2 up against Bayern Munich at the Etihad last November. A flawless away performance in Rome ensured their qualification two weeks later. City did it the hard way.
