Manchester United, Ajax, Lyon and Celta Vigo are all in the hat for that one.

Goodbye.

Real Madrid went on to beat Juventus in the final that year courtesy of Predrag Mijatovic's second-half goal in Amsterdam. A sixth European triumph ended their 32-year drought.

No team in the Champions League era has yet managed to retain their title.

So there we have it. Madrid duo Real and Atletico will go head-to-head in the Champions League for the fourth season in a row.

Can Diego Simeone's side inflict a dose of revenge on their local rivals after those two painful recent final defeats?

Former Liverpool and Juventus striker Ian Rush, a two-time European Cup winner in 1981 and 1984, comes out to conduct the draw.

Here we go...

Uefa's managing director of communications and official spokesman, Pedro Pinto, is joined on stage by Welsh First Minister Carwyn Jones.

This year's Champions League final will take place at Cardiff's atmospheric Millennium Stadium on 3 June.

Monaco have reached the semi-final stage of Europe's elite club competition for the first time in 13 years after edging past Leverkusen in Group E and knocking out Manchester City on away goals in a truly thrilling, goal-laden last-16 affair.

They scored three times in both quarter-final legs against Dortmund, the first of which was pushed back a day following a shocking bomb attack on the BVB team bus.

Kylian Mbappe

In-demand teenage forward Kylian Mbappe is the first player to score in all of his first four knockout appearances. The Red and Whites are a serious attacking force to be reckoned with.

Juventus went undefeated en route to claiming top spot ahead of Sevilla in Group H and did not concede once in their subsequent two-legged win over FC Porto.

After a stunning brace from Paulo Dybala helped blow away Barcelona in Turin, the fearless Bianconeri went to the Nou Camp on Wednesday night and produced a stunning defensive display to ensure that they did not follow Paris Saint-Germain in falling victim to another stunning Catalan comeback.

Atletico topped Group D ahead of Bayern and quickly wrapped up a last-16 victory over Bayer Leverkusen by firing four away goals.

Antoine Griezmann netted from 12 yards in a slender first-leg win over Leicester at the Vicente Calderon and Los Rojiblancos had Saul Niguez to thank for holding off the spirited Foxes back on English soil.

Jamie Vardy levelled the match on the night, but Craig Shakespeare's men, who largely dominated, were simply left with too much to do.

So how exactly did each team progress through to the last four?

Holders and 11-time European champions Real Madrid finished second behind Borussia Dortmund in Group F before putting Napoli to the sword in the first knockout phase.

They then came from behind to beat 10-man Bayern Munich in Bavaria thanks to a brace from Cristiano Ronaldo.

The four-time Ballon d'Or winner later became the first player ever to notch a century of Champions League goals with a hat-trick in an enthralling 4-2 extra-time quarter-final second-leg victory back at the Bernabeu that was slightly tainted by controversial decisions and an incredibly harsh red card for Arturo Vidal.

Such a triumph secured a seventh consecutive semi-final berth for Los Blancos. That is the longest streak in competition history.

Semi-final dates

The semi-final first legs are due to be played on the 2nd and 3rd of May, with return fixtures taking place one week later (9th and 10th).

There are no association restrictions at this stage of the competition, meaning that we could well see a repeat of last year's final between Real and Atletico. The Madrid rivals also met in the tournament showpiece back in 2014.

Good morning and a very warm welcome to IBTimes UK's live coverage of the draw for the semi-finals of the 2016-17 Champions League.

English interest in the competition may now be sadly over for another year following Leicester City's valiant midweek exit, but there are still plenty of intriguing plotlines to pour over as holders Real Madrid, cross-city rivals Atletico, reigning Serie A champions Juventus and prolific Ligue 1 leaders Monaco prepare to learn their last-four fate.
