UFC 211's Joanna Jedrzejczyk says it would be 'amazing' to equal Ronda Rousey's title defence record
Jedrzejczyk is two wins away from equaling Rousey's record of six title defences in a row.
As she prepares to defend her title against Jessica Andrade at UFC 211, women's strawweight champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk is eyeing up Ronda Rousey's title defence record.
Jedrzejczyk (13-0 record in MMA) is one of the few UFC champions who was able to keep their titles in 2016. Apart from her, flyweight champion Demetrious Johnson and light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier remained champions.
Now looking to defend her title successfully for the fifth time since winning it in March 2015, the 29-year-old says it would be "amazing" to equal Rousey's record of six title defences.
"I'm one of the only undefeated champions, which is amazing, because last year was very crazy for other UFC champions," she told Sporting News. "It's just me, DC and Demetrious Johnson with our titles and it would be amazing to reach Ronda Rousey's record because I respect her so much."
"She's an elegant person, she's an amazing athlete and has done so much for this sport. It would be amazing to reach her record of six defences."
Jedrzejczyk is only the company's second strawweight champion after she defeated Carla Esparza in brutal fashion at UFC 185 as she reflected on how it was a dream come true to win the strap.
"I remember when I got a phone call saying they wanted me to fight for this belt and it was a dream come true," she added. "We don't win our belts in a robbery or anything. We must put in good work to become a champion. There's more than 500 fighters – good fighters – and to be the champion of champions, it's big."
"Now I have moved on with new goals, new dreams and am looking even higher. It's amazing. It's a good life."
Andrade stands in the Polish champion's way and Jedrzejczyk acknowledges that the Brazilian will arguably be her hardest test in the division.
"She's a big challenge for me," she explained. "She's big and tough and can fight, but I think she's the right person to fight. She's short, she came down from the 135 division, her upper body is very muscular and like everyone from Brazil, she has good jiu-jitsu and good takedowns."
UFC 211 takes place on 13 May in the American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas.
