Overview

Less than a month on from the second ever Monday finish at The Open Championship, the world's top golfers are met by another daunting prospect in the form of Wisconsin's Whistling Straits. Though it was conditions overhead at St Andrews that disrupted play, the main challenge facing players will be underneath them in the form of a near 8,000-yard links course, which is set to claim further victims.

The course is occupied by 1,000 bunkers, which caught out Dustin Johnson in 2010 when he mistook a designated hazard for a patch of dirt on his 72nd hole, and therefore took a two-stroke penalty. A par on that fateful day would have been enough to deliver his biggest career victory, but as it is, he is without a major title, with six top nine finishes in 17 subsequent starts.

The injury crisis befalling world number one Rory McIlroy has assisted in deflecting the attention away from Johnson in the lead up to the tournament, with the Northern Irish player fit again after rupturing ankle ligaments.

McIlroy has not played since the US Open in June and as a result trails Jordan Spieth as the pre-tournament favourite but the two-tie major winning American is among a clutch of players who have suffer near-misses in 2015. Australia's Jason Day has twice been denied his maiden major this year and is a genuine threat, as is Justin Rose – who came close at the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational.
