US sending assistant secretary of state to Cuba for talks
US Assistant Secretary of State Roberta Jacobson will travel to Havana on Jan. 21-22 for talks on migration and normalisation, the State Department said on Thursday (January 08).
Jacobson's trip comes as part of the Obama administration's rapprochement with Cuba that began last month after more than 50 years of a U.S. embargo on the communist nation.
State Department spokeswoman, Jen Psaki said Jacobson's visit was the start of the process toward restoring diplomatic relations with Havana but there was no timeline by which full rapprochement was expected to be achieved.
"This is just the beginning of having a discussion about these specific issues, and obviously an opportunity to talk about some of the logistical details. So at this point, I'm not going to lay out a timeline," Psaki said.
