Vera Wang Race Row: Chinese Brides Charged £300 Just to Try on Wedding Dresses
Top American fashion designer Vera Wang, who has dressed some of the biggest celebrities including Mariah Carey, Victoria Beckham and Kim Kardashian, has been accused of discriminating against Chinese brides.
The 63-year-old New York-born couturier has charging shoppers just to try on her gowns at her newly opened store on China's mainland.
The Shanghai boutique bridal shop in the upmarket Huangpu district is demanding a non-refundable fee of 3,000 yuan (£318, $450) to try on gowns for 90 minutes. Even photography and filming are strictly forbidden in the store. However, if a purchase is made, the fee will be deducted from the sale price.
"Vera Wang, Queen of Bridal, has also topped this profit maximization scheme to the max. While brides are bribed with wine and flattery in her other flagships around the world, she's expecting the brides to bribe her in China," blog, Shanghaiist.com, wrote.
Wang is a first generation Chinese American, whose parents were born in Shanghai.
In a statement to IBTimes UK, Vera Wang spokesperson said: "The activities of one of our international partners has been brought to our attention. We are reviewing this carefully and taking measures to ensure all of our stores offer the same standard of excellence worldwide."
