Damon almost lets Bonnie get hit by a car as he thinks she is responsible for Elena's deep sleep CW

Apart from their sad and complicated love life, Damon and Stefan Salvatore will have to deal with the blood thirsty heretics who are close to Lily's heart. Vampire Diaries season 7 premiere will show how Mystic Falls has fallen from its glory due to the Salvatore matriarch's "beloved" family, who have left no stone unturned to ruin it.

According to the premiere synopsis, worrying for her friend's future, Bonnie decides to become "Damon's moral compass". However, he will keep taunting her as he thinks that the Bennett witch is responsible for Dalena's separation. In the premiere episode the Salvatore vampire will makes jokes about killing Bonnie "to wake up the love of his life [Elena]".

Upon seeing Mystic Falls in danger, Stefan will get into action and strike a deal with his mother to keep his friends safe. However, Caroline will find the treaty of peace quite odd and instead of bowing down before the heretics, she may decide to fight back.

In the second episode of season 7 titled Lily And The Heretics' Plan For Retribution, Caroline will find herself as a pawn and in the process she will uncover a shocking detail about the younger Salvatore brother's past.

Fans of Elena, meanwhile, are disappointed with the fact that there will be no Dalena moments in season 7 as their favourite character has gone into a 60-year-long sleep. However, Somerhalder has urged TVD fans to keep watching the show to see how his character will dramatically evolve in due course of time.

"All I can say about that is that they were great characters separate, they were great characters together, and they remain great characters separated," Somerhalder told E! News. "Damon is still here and he's still evolving and he's still having a blast and he's still saying super-smarmy, ridiculously overly confident, very wildly embarrassing and degrading things and he will continue to do that, but with a little love for Elena in his heart."

The synopsis of the upcoming season reads as follows:

"After a twisted plan left the life of his girlfriend Elena linked to that of his best friend Bonnie, Damon is forced to navigate his new reality without the love of his life. A newly empowered Bonnie has decided that she will be Damon's moral compass and keeps a close eye on him as he, in turn, cautiously keeps tabs on Alaric, following the loss of his fiancée Jo. Meanwhile, as he waits for Caroline to sort out her emotions, Stefan takes an active role in protecting the town from Lily and her family of Heretics, who have wasted no time wreaking havoc in Mystic Falls. Elsewhere, Enzo struggles to find his place in Lily's new life, and is quickly forced to decide where his true loyalties lie. Finally, with the stakes higher than ever, Matt, who has recently completed his deputy training program, teams up with Stefan and Caroline to put a stop to the Heretics, but an unexpected turn of events leaves one of them in a dangerous position."
