Amir Khan reveals why he accused wife Faryal Makhdoom of affair with Anthony Joshua
British boxer opens up about his marriage woes ahead of I'm A Celebrity stint.
Amir Khan has admitted that he regrets his public spat with his pregnant wife Faryal Makhdoom and is now "embarrassed" by his actions.
The British boxer's marriage became tabloid fodder in August when he sensationally accused the 26-year-old American-Pakistani model of enjoying a secret rendezvous with fellow boxer Anthony Joshua on Twitter.
"Faryal moved on quick. Always mentioned to me how much she wanted to be with another guy, from all people another boxer @anthonyfjoshua," one of his scathing tweets read.
Ahead of his stint on I'm A Celebrity, the 30-year-old sportsman spoke candidly about his marriage woes.
"I think if you look at the whole situation, it was all just silly, starting with the texts, then when I accused her of messaging Joshua, it was all just nonsense really from the start," he told The Sun.
"I lived my life on social media. I assumed things which were wrong and I really embarrassed myself."
He went on to add that he lashed out because he was frustrated with his career. "I'd just had my hand operation and wasn't fighting as much, so I was frustrated about not being in the boxing ring and not being able to train. I think that made me hot-headed."
In the wake of their online showdown, Makhdoom tried to do some damage control with a statement that said the couple publicly aired their dirty laundry following a huge misunderstanding and that she was hopeful they could save their marriage after the dust settled.
However, she was left "humiliated" after he insisted that they were still getting a divorce. "Thanks to Faryal for clearing up the accusations she had made about my family in the past which were false," he said at the time.
He added: "Unfortunately it didn't work out between Me and Faryal and we are still going ahead with the divorce. We are in good talking terms. We have to think about our daughter Lamaisah who I will always be there for. I wish Faryal all the very best for the future."
On 10 November the sportsman shared a snap of him cuddled up on the sofa with his wife wearing loungewear, confirming that they had reconciled. The caption read: "With my 4 month pregnant wife, after sorting out all the issues. Closing the year with a happy ending @faryalmakhdoom."
Revealing why he decided to call off the divorce, he said that it was for the sake of their three-year-old daughter Lamaisah and their unborn child. "We both sat down and thought, 'Look, we've got a family, we've got a little girl'.
"Also she's expecting so we have to think for the kids. In life you have to forgive. We have to move forward and move on from things like that.
"That's part of life. You always make mistakes and it's about coming through them and not making them mistakes again.
"I made a few silly mistakes. I did put my life on social media, I assumed things which were wrong. So I kind of embarrassed myself."
Makhdoom had told fans that the couple reconciled because their love is real. Taking to Instagram, she shared a snap of the pair side by side and posing with the gushing message: "If it's real they'll find you no matter how far you go."
