Angelina Jolie reveals marriage to Brad Pitt broke down after By the Sea: 'There was a heaviness'
Jolie, 42, filed for divorce from Pitt just one year after the film's release.
She fell in love with her third husband Brad Pitt on the set of Mr and Mrs Smith in 2005, and Angelina Jolie believed that working on another film together, By the Sea, would help salvage their marriage in 2015.
The 42-year-old Oscar winner, who were in a relationship for 12 years and married for two, has revealed she thought working with her husband, 53, would help them get their relationship back on track and prompt them to communicate better .However, it just made things worse.
Jolie directed the marital drama flick two years ago and admitted she thought it could have a positive impact on their marriage.
Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter's podcast Awards Chatter, Jolie said: "We had met working together and we worked together well... I wanted us to do some serious work together... I thought it would be a good way for us to communicate."
Despite spending quality time working together on the film, her plan to strengthen their bond went wrong.
"In some ways it was [a good way to communicate], and in some ways we learned some things. But there was a heaviness probably during that situation that carried on and it wasn't because of the film."
"It was something that we were dealing... things happen for different reasons, and things... why did I write that exact piece? Why did we feel that way when we made it? I'm not sure," she added.
By the Sea is about a couple who have been married for 14 years who drive to a coastal hotel despite barely being on speaking terms. Pitt's character, Roland, is a writer and plans to pen a story during their stay.
Following some dramas, including a spat with the couple in the room next door after Jolie's character Vanessa attempts a liason with the younger man, the couple leave reconciled.
Sadly, the film didn't help repair Jolie and Pitt's marriage. They separated a year later in 2016 and Jolie requested physical custody of their children in her divorce filing.
The couple, who were known simply as "Brangelina" in the media, shared six children together, and allegedly sparked a romance while Pitt was still married to his former wife, Jennifer Aniston.
Jolie vehemently denied rumours of an affair, previously stating: "To be intimate with a married man, when my own father cheated on my mother, is not something I could forgive. I could not look at myself in the morning if I did that. I wouldn't be attracted to a man who would cheat on his wife."
