Nadal progressed to the second round of the BNP Paribas Open even without featuring in the first round. The Spaniard was drafted directly into the second round as he is one of the top players to take part in the event.
The 27-year-old won the competition last season. Being the defending champion and the world No 1, all eyes will be on Nadal to retain the title and the Spaniard is one of the favourites to win the BNP Paribas Open this year.
Meanwhile, his opponent Stepanek had to feature in the first round of the BNP Paribas Open. The 35-year-old registered a victory over Denis Istomin to seal a clash against Nadal on Saturday. Stepanek defeated Istomin 6-1, 3-6, 6-1.
