Borussia Dortmund chief admits Mats Hummels could sign for Bayern Munich this summer
Borussia Dortmund defender Mats Hummels could be set to join Bayern Munich this summer, according to Hans-Joachim Watzke, chief executive of his current club. The 27-year-old star is reportedly a transfer target for a number of European clubs, including Manchester United, but Watzke thinks his most likely destination is the Allianz Arena.
Watzke is fighting to keep Hummels at Dortmund, but has confessed he could be lured away by Bayern, the club where he started his professional career. "I believe that if he [Hummels] goes, it will be in the direction of Munich," Watzke told Sky Deutschland of the reported United transfer target.
"He still has unfinished business with the club. His father, his mother and his brother all live in Munich. His girlfriend comes from Munich, he's from Munich too – so a whole lot of components have already come together."
Watzke admitted he can understand why Hummels is considering his future at the Westfalenstadion, even though he is desperate to keep the player at Dortmund. Aside from Bayern, Hummels has been linked to United, Chelsea and Barcelona.
"We have to accept when someone like Mats, who has already played for Borussia Dortmund for eight years, is 27 and would come to think: 'Am I going to play for Borussia Dortmund for my entire career, or will I do something else?'" he said amid rumours linking the player to United.
