'Dancing With the Stars' season 28 recap: Find out who was eliminated in Week 2
DWTS Season 28 featured first eliminations with new voting system.
"Dancing With the Stars" (DWTS) season 28 kicked off last week with new celebrity pairings, voting system, and twists. Show hosts Tom Bergeron and Erin Andrews introduced new celebrity pairings who performed their first ballroom dance.
DWTS returned Monday for its second episode and season's first elimination. Before they revealed the first lay off, DWTS paid a tribute to departed contestants of DWTS Valerie Harper of Season 17 and Florence Henderson of Season 11.
Soon after, the show began with the new voting system in place. The new voting system allows the fans to vote live via calls and texts, the scores are then combined with judges' scores. Meanwhile, judges -- Len Goodman, Bruno Tunoli and Carrie Ann Inaba have the power to save one out of the bottom two couples while the other one gets eliminated for good.
Week 2 began with couples dancing one of the many unlearned dances introduced this week: Pasodoble, quickstep, rumba, samba and Viennese waltz.
DWTS Week 2 dances and scores
Lamar Odom and Peta Murgatroyd performed salsa to "Con Calma" by Daddy Yankee feat. Snow. Before the performance, he talked about 12 strokes and six heart attacks after his accident in Las Vegas. Scores 12/30.
Mary Wilson and Brandon Armstrong did the cha-cha-cha to Aretha Franklin's Think. Judges pointed at a "lot of little mistakes" that she made during the performance. Score: 15/30.
Ray Lewis and Cheryl Burke did the foxtrot to "September" by Earth, Wind & Fire. In the high-tempo performance, he made "numerous mistakes." Scores: 15/30.
Sean Spicer and Lindsay Arnold took the stage to perform the tango to "Shut Up and Dance" by Walk the Moon. The judges felt it was better than the last week. Scores: 16/30.
Christie Brinkley was replaced last week due to an accident by her daughter Sailor Brinkley-Cook. With her partner Val Chmerkovskiy, the 21-year-old model performed rumba on "Señorita" by Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello. Judges felt like the couple was lacking consistency. Scores: 18/30.
Lauren Alaina and Gleb Savchenko performed Paso Doble to "Confident" by Demi Lovato. Judges said the performance was "focused" and "strong." Scores: 19/30.
Karamo and Jenna Johnson performed quickstep on Prince & The Revolution's "Let's Go Crazy." The performance earned mixed reviews from the judges. Scores: 19/30.
James Van Der Beek and Emma Slater set the stage on fire with cha-cha-cha performance on "Dancing on the Ceiling" by Lionel Richie. It was one of the solid performance's of the night, as per the judges. Scores: 20/30.
Ally Brooke and Sasha Farber gave a "compelling, heartfelt performance" on "Iris" by Goo Goo Dolls. Scores: 20/30.
Kel Mitchell opened about having a tough week due to her father's brain surgery. However, Mitchell's performance with Witney Carson didn't show it. The couple performed Samba on Bobby Brown's "Every Little Step." Scores: 20/30.
Kate Flannery and Pasha Pashkov's foxtrot to Fly Me to the Moon" by Frank Sinatra earned rave reviews by the judges. Scores: 21/30.
Hannah Brown and Alan Bersten did the Viennese Waltz to Taylor Swift's "Lover" and earned the badge of best dance of the night. Scores: 24/30.
As per the new eliminating system, Mary Wilson and Brandon, and Ray Lewis and Cheryl Burke made it to bottom two. When it was up to the judges to save one out of the two pairs, Inaba chose Mary and Brandon, Tonioli picked Ray and Cheryl, and Goodman chose Ray and Cheryl. So, Mary Wilson and her partner were eliminated for good in week 2.
DWTS season 28 airs on Monday on ABC.
