Edwina Currie Thinks 'I'm A Celebrity…' is 'Ritual Humiliation' But Joins 2014 Line-up Anyway
Former UK health minister is off to eat witchetty grubs in Aussie jungle
Two years after she publicly lambasted the reality show I'm A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here as being "ritual humiliation", Edwina Currie will be heading into the Australian jungle as one of its contestants.
According to the Sun, Currie will receive "up to £110,000" for appearing on the show.
The ex-Conservative minister, who revealed in 2002 that she had a four-year affair with ex-Prime Minister John Major, rose to the position of health minister during her political career. She resigned in 1988 after declaring people were at serious risk of catching salmonella from eggs.
The outspoken former MP turned novelist is the second Tory to appear on the show, following Nadine Dorries' inclusion in the 2012.
Entering the jungle with Edwina Currie will be BBC journalist Michael Buerk, rapper Tinchy Stryder, actors Craig Charles and Vicki Michelle,as well as two models, a World Superbike racer and Z-list celebrities from The Only Way Is Essex and the Playboy Mansion.
Former Fulham and Wigan footballer Jimmy Bullard is also taking part and is an early bookmakers favourite to win the competition. The 36-year-old revealed that he had lost £625,000 through failed investment schemes, leaving the former football star, once earning £45,000 a week at Hull City, in serious financial difficulty.
Bullard, known as a prankster and a keen lover of angling, has denied that his motive for appearing on the ITV reality show was due to his financial woes: "I looked after it [his money] and I can assure you it's not why I came in the jungle."
He surprised the Daily Mirror by claiming he would have even paid ITV to appear on the show: "I tell you what I would of come in the jungle for nothing. I would have paid them a little bit of money to get me in there."
British comedian Alan Carr has already slammed this year's I'm A Celebrity line-up, cheekily saying the stars were "less recognisable than cockroaches".
The Chatty Man star insisted: "But I will take it back on Sunday if I see The Pope jumping out of a helicopter."
I'm a Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! 2014 starts tomorrow.
