England 2-0 Malta, Sturridge and Alli's goals help Gareth Southgate seal first win: Twitter reactions
England face Slovenia in the next World Cup qualifiers on 11 October.
Gareth Southgate registered a win in his first game as England manager as he saw the Three Lions seal a 2-0 comfortable victory over Malta during the 2018 World Cup qualifiers at Wembley on 8 October.
Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge opened the scoring just before the half hour mark. A brilliant cross from club teammate Jordan Henderson saw the former Manchester City and Chelsea man heading the ball into the corner to give his side the lead.
Tottenham Hotspur star Dele Alli doubled the lead in the 38th minute which was sufficient for the English side to seal a victory over Malta. Southgate would be delighted to start his new role with a win and he will be hoping for the same result in the remaining three games of his reign.
The Football Association (FA) appointed Southgate as the interim manager and will be managing the Three Lions' fixtures until the end of this calendar year. This after Sam Allardyce resigned from his post as England manager after 67 days, following a newspaper sting. England face Slovenia in the next World Cup qualifiers on 11 October.

Rooney lost possession more times (25) than any other England player against a dire team. A formerly world class player who is now finished.

Rooney's finished for England and United, but booing him is pathetic. It's not like he's Fellaini, Alli or Townsend.#MUFC #Eng #THFC #CPFC

87 - England have had 87 shots (inc. blocks) over their last four international games, scoring just four goals in the process. Peppered.
