England hammer Sri Lanka by an innings and 88 runs to seal first victory inside three days
England have swept aside Sri Lanka and sealed victory by an innings and 88 over inside three days at Headingley. A three hour rain delay disrupted play on Saturday, 20 May, but it didn't little to prevent a devastating performance from Jimmy Anderson, who claimed another five wickets – bringing his haul to 10 inside two days.
The tourists finished the afternoon all out for 119 with Anderson claiming 5-29. Kusal Mendis offered some resistance for Sri Lanka with 53 but couldn't prevent the hosts sweeping to victory not long after tea.
Anderson provided the perfect finish to the afternoon when he cleanly bowled Nuwan Pradeep for his 10th wicket.
Steve Finn also claimed three wickets in five balls either side of tea after Stuart Broad removed captain Angelo Mathews.
Sometimes you take it for granted, but watching Stuart and Jimmy go about their business was a pleasure to captain, captain Alastair Cook said.
"Jonny Bairstow was batting on a different wicket to the other 21 players in this match. The first time I saw him I thought he would play for England and he'll go from strength to strength."
